What is the Future Physician Leaders Program?

The Future Physician Leaders (FPL) program is a summer mentorship program for prospective healthcare students who also want to fulfill a mission of service to the community. The nine-week summer program is comprised of four components:

1. Leadership Lecture Series

2. Community Health Project

3. Mentorship Program

4. Program Symposium

The FPL program aims to support students through all stages of preparation including college, medical school, residency, and beyond.

The program enrolls college students from the Inland Southern California region committed to serving their community and pursuing a career in medicine. Space in the program is limited and applicants must sign a social contract ensuring their complete participation. After completing the summer program, participants are invited to numerous networking events throughout the year.  The community-based, collaborative program was started in 2009 by Dr. Raul Ruiz.

Program activities are scheduled in both in-person and synchronous virtual formats with some asynchronous activities. There is no cost to apply or participate in the FPL program.

Program Goals

We are committed to developing a large cohort of health professional leaders who will return to these communities of Coachella Valley, Riverside, and San Bernardino as medical or healthcare professionals. Our program goal is consistent with the mission of the developing UC Riverside School of Medicine "to improve the health of the people of California and, especially, to serve Inland Southern California by training a diverse workforce of physicians and by developing innovative research and health care delivery programs that will improve the health of the medically underserved in the region and become models to be emulated throughout the state and nation."
