Future Physician Leaders Program

Becoming Part of the FPL Program

Joining the Future Physician Leaders Program

The Future Physician Leaders program is for high school seniors, community college students, college pre-med, medical students, and post-graduate interested in being future physician leaders and returning to serve their communities. Students must have an interest in a career in health care or other inter-related professions, such as public policy.

The program is intended for students from the Inland Southern California region, including Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Applicants must have a permanent address in these areas to be eligible to participate.

The lecture series, community service and research projects, and mentorship events are open to high school seniors, college students, and college graduates. Participation in the Physician Shadow Rotation component is limited to students at least 18 years of age and preference is given to students in at least their second year of college.

What are the program location sites?

In the Coachella Valley, the program is administered from the UC Riverside Palm Desert Campus in Palm Desert, CA.  The shadowing rotations are at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, CA, Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, CA, and other local clinic sites.

In the Riverside - San Bernardino area, the program is administered from the Cal State San Bernardino campus.  The shadowing rotations are at Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, CA and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and other local clinic sites.

What is the purpose of the program?

We are committed to developing a large cohort of health profession leaders that will return to these communities of Coachella Valley, Riverside, and San Bernardino as medical or health care professionals. Our program goal is consistent with the mission of the developing UC Riverside School of Medicine "to improve the health of the people of California and, especially, to serve Inland Southern California by training  a diverse workforce of physicians and by developing innovative research and health care delivery programs that will improve the health of the medically underserved in the region and become models to be emulated throughout the state and nation."

Is there a cost to participate?

There is no cost to apply or participate in the Future Physician Leaders program. Students accepted to participate in the Physician Shadowing Rotations are required to purchase black scrubs (approx. $35) to wear to their rotations.

Students are responsible for their own transportation expenses and housing is not provided.

How can I get involved throughout the remainder of the year?

FPL students are life-long members. Students can volunteer for upcoming events such as the annual Flying Doctors gathering in the Coachella region.

Returning students interested in being mentors can apply for the FPL Student Committee in the fall. The application can be found on the Forms & Documents page.
