Future Physician Leaders Program

Physician Shadowing Rotations

Physician Shadowing Rotations

The physician shadowing rotation component is an opportunity for students to shadow a physician once a week and acquire knowledge about their specialty. Students are often invited by the physician to stay longer. Students have observed in places such as primary care clinics, emergency department, operating rooms, catheterization labs, hemodialysis centers, and radiology suites. They are exposed to "a physician's life" as well as the patient-doctor interaction and are given the opportunity to develop a mentoring relationship with the physician.

Only 40 students are selected to participate in the summer shadowing component of the program. The minimum requirement for consideration are to:

  • be at least 18 years of age.
  • be at least a second-year college student or college graduate.
  • have the desire to serve the community by becoming a future physician leader.
